Animal Care: Behind the Scenes

Just like we have to visit doctors to make sure we’re in the best of health, ECHO’s animal ambassadors sometimes need to get checked out.

ECHO’s big female Northern map turtle recently took a trip to a local veterinary hospital for a little ‘dental’ work. Turtles don’t have teeth: they have beaks, like birds, and her beak had become slightly overgrown, which can make grabbing and holding onto food a little more challenging! A little grinding and buzzing later and her beak was in much better shape. This little bit of maintenance helps with our efforts to keep her happy and healthy.

ECHO’s graphic arts intern Melisa Rayvid spoke with Jenn Dean and Shannon Kane,
Environmental Exhibit Specialists, to learn more about “Big Mama’s” specialized care..

Watch and stay tuned for more in this behind the scenes series.
