Introducing Mary

Hi everyone! My name is Mary and I am the newest social media & marketing intern at ECHO and you'll be seeing my posts here all summer long. This fall, I will be a senior at the University of Vermont where I study Public Communication with an English minor.

I am thrilled to be working with the marketing team at ECHO and I look forward to sharing my experience with you all over the next few months!
Prior to my internship at ECHO, I never had the chance to visit. On my first day, I was able to explore the science center and truly get to know ECHO. It was so cool to see various species of frogs, learn about the Adirondacks and the ecosystem within Lake Champlain, and I was even able to visit our latest exhibit, Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl: Home Sweet Home.
While walking through each exhibit I was astounded at how interactive they are for both children and adults. Each display offers games, videos, and often different features that the guest can control to help enhance his or her education at ECHO.
Personally, my two favorite exhibits are the baby spiny softshell turtle viewing station and Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl: Home Sweet Home. While watching the turtles, you are able to see directly into their tank and from a bird’s-eye view, thanks to an overhead screen. I also found it interesting how it is possible to control the black light above the turtles so that whatever you want to see becomes highlighted and easier to view.
I enjoyed Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl - it offers a playful, interactive experience that also motivates and teaches children how to care for natural resources and how to sustain our “home sweet home.” This exhibit offers a ton of information that helps to familiarize adults with local sustainability too. I think this is a great way to attract attention to a very important cause in our local community and the world.

Over the course of the next few months, I am excited to learn more about these exhibits, their roles in the communities surrounding Lake Champlain, and how they affect ECHO’s visitors. This summer ECHO will be offering many fun family events and I can't wait to post about them for you all!
