Although Smokey Bear &Woodsy Owl are leaving us on September 13, it does not mean that your fun outdoor adventures need to come to an end.  Here is a list of exciting, do it yourself, projects that you can continue to do without the help of Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl.

1. Take a hike! Vermont has over 700 miles of hiking trails throughout the Green Mountain Range.  There is a wide variety of trails suitable for the whole family. Don't forget to bring your camera.

2. Go on a scavenger hunt for indigenous animals. Vermont has a large variety of ecosystems with many different species. Some of these wildlife animals include black bears, moose, deer, loons, and a large variety of  sea creatures from Lake Champlain.

3. Plant a garden. Don't be fooled by Vermont's unpredictable weather. This time a year it is a good idea to start thinking about some Fall vegetables to plant. These may include lettuce, beets, carrots, kale, and cabbage.

4. Construct a bird house. A few common birds that reside in man made birdhouses are chickadees, titmice, bluebirds, and wrens. Make sure you are building a house that is helpful to the animal, not harmful.

5. Build a campfire. Finding the proper type of wood is very important. Smokey Bear suggests tinder, kindling, and fuel. A campfire is a great resource for cooking, keeping warm, and roasting marshmallows! To be sure that you stay safe, keep the fire small and under control.

Don't forget to use all of the safety tips that you learned from Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl: Home Sweet Home.
